Granuloma inguinale

It is caused by a bacteria called Klebsiella granulomatosis. It is mostly sexually acquired especially through anal sex. It is also associated with other SAIs such as HIV. The incubation period is unsure but is probably 50 days. It is common in Africa, South America, S.E. Asia, India and Caribbean. Granuloma inguinale starts with a bump wich can be itchy but it can become an ulcer. In appearance it can be quite red, painless and can easily bleed. It can also cause considerable harm to the genital area. Antibiotics are given to treat this infection.

Partner notification: all sexual contacts within 40 days of disease onset should be examined and offered treatment.
