Why People Have Sex

Sexual pleasure is an important aspect of sexual health, and in fact, there are several advantages of having a healthy sex life. It enhances relationships, has health benefits such as reducing the risk of prostate cancer and cardiac problems, and is involved in pain relief through release of oxytocin and endorphins. It also enhances self-esteem especially in the context of a healthy relationship and helps to reduce stress.

Meston & Buss (2007) found that people mostly have sex for several reasons including time-attraction, pleasure, affection, love, romance, emotional closeness, arousal, the desire to please, adventure, excitement experience, connection, celebration, curiosity and opportunity. It has been observed that when comparing men's and women's sexual motivations and behaviours, men have sex is often centred more on physical pleasures, whereas women, the sex is more centred towards emotions. However, sex differs from individual to individual and even varies between the two genders.
