What is HIV self-testing?
HIV self-testing allows people to take an HIV test and find out their result in their own home or other private location. It refers to a process in which a person collects their own specimen (blood or oral fluid), performs an HIV test, and interprets the result in less than 20 minutes. You may choose to be alone or to have someone you trust with you while doing the test.
While HIV self-tests are available for retail purchase (pharmacies, NGOs etc) by consumers, it is also recommended to do an HIV test at the GU Clinic, especially if you react positive to the test. Self-testing kits available in Malta can be used preferably 12 weeks after your most recent possible exposure. If you are making use of these tests frequently, it is also recommendable to make an appointment at the GU Clinic for other STI testing and PrEP consultation.
