What is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection which is caused by a parasite called Trichomonas Vaginalis.
How does someone get Trichomoniasis?

What are the symptoms of Trichomoniasis?
- Symptoms usually develop within one month of infection.
- 50% of people infected with trichomoniasis do not develop symptoms.
- Individuals who do not have symptoms can still pass on the infection to others.
Symptoms among persons with female characteristics include:
- Abnormal vaginal discharge which may have an unusual consistency and colour. It may be thick, thin or frothy and yellow-green in colour.
- Vaginal discharge which may have an unpleasant fishy smell.
- Soreness, swelling and itching in the region surrounding the vagina.
- Pain or discomfort when having sex or when urinating.
- Lower abdominal pain.
Symptoms among persons with male characteristics include:
- Pain when urinating or during ejaculation.
- Peeing frequently (more than usual).
- White discharge from Penis.
- Soreness, swelling and redness around the tip of the penis or foreskin.
How can I prevent Trichomoniasis?
- Avoid douching. Do not attempt to wash your vagina with soap and water as your vagina is "self cleaning" and does not require this. Soap and water may disrupt the natural vaginal balance of good and bad bacteria.
- Use condoms when having sex.
- Avoid having numerous sexual partners.
How can I get tested for trichomoniasis?
- If your doctor suspects trichomoniasis, they will usually examine your genital area.
- Trichomoniasis may be diagnosed by looking at a sample of the vaginal / penile discharge under a microscope.
- Trichomoniasis is treated with antibiotics.
- About 1 in 5 people get infected again within 3 months after receiving treatment. In order to avoid re-infection, all sex partners should gets treated with antibiotics at the same time. Be sure to revisit your doctor should symptoms recur.
What are the complications of trichomoniasis?
- Trichomoniasis can result in an increased risk of developing sexually transmitted infections such as HIV.
- Pregnant persons with Trichomoniasis are also more likely to have their babies at an abnormally early stage (preterm) or have babies with an abnormally low birthweight.
Should I inform my partner if I have Trichomoniasis?
Yes, this is very important as your sexual partner(s) may also have the infection and will require treatment.
